The Canadian retail sector has witnessed major economic growth. There are more than 1.8 million retail workers in Canada, and annual sales in this sector of our economy are fast approaching $1 trillion.
The majority of jobs in retail continue to be at the lower end of the wage scale (e.g. Stock Clerks, Sales Associates). However here are some of the jobs that pay over $50,000 a year. Note that compensation packages at this level also tend offer bonuses, plus discounts on merchandise the company sells.
Retail Store Manager
Plans and directs the day-to-day operations of a retail store. Develops strategies to improve customer service, drive store sales, and increase profitability. Ensures customer needs are met, complaints are resolved, and service is quick and efficient. Makes sure all products and displays are merchandised effectively to maximize sales and profitability. Forecasts staffing needs and develops a recruiting strategy to provide optimal staffing in all areas. May require a bachelor's degree or its equivalent and at least 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
Ranges from about $47,000 - $67,000 a year. This average figure could rise significantly in higher end outlets and large department stores, up to $90,000+ annually.
Responsible for purchasing and negotiating materials, equipment, merchandise and services from vendors (suppliers). Evaluates vendor quotes and services to determine most desirable suppliers. May require a bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of experience in the field or related area. Familiar with costing and budgeting are essential.
Compiles data for analyzing retail sales and inventory, identifying opportunities and issues, and making recommendations to sales management while working closely with the sales team and with retail buying and support staff. Retrieves and analyzes reports from retailer sites using software such as Retail Link. Prepares and presents weekly POS reports to Sales Management for identified accounts. Requires a college or university degree in a related discipline (such as Business or Retail Planning). Math skills are essential.
While annual wages for this position may start at $40,000 with entry level jobs, experienced Retail Analysts can earn upwards of $65 - $80,000 a year (particularly for larger retailers and higher end stores).
