Spring 2012 Job And Career Fairs Across Canada

Job seekers put on your business attire and get ready to meet with recruiters! Career fairs are being held from coast to coast during spring 2012.

Print up plenty of resumes because you’ll be handing them out to employers who attend your local events. You’ll line up to meet face to face with recruiters from a variety of companies. So be prepared. Do your research beforehand. Practice your interview skills. Then follow up afterward professionally. With a bit of good luck, you might get hired on the spot.

Research The Employers Who Will Be At The Career Fair

Do your research beforehand. Find out which companies will be at the career fair. Visit their respective websites. Learn more about the kinds of products and services they offer. Read their “About Us” section: have they recently announced any new developments, financial status updates, mergers or acquisitions?

All of this info will help you decide whether you want to work for this particular employer. You should also weave some of these details into the discussion you have with the company’s interviewer at the fair. Try to show how you can help them solve a problem of theirs, or assist them in taking advantage of new opportunities. They’ll be impressed.

Practice Your Interview Skills.

At job fairs you’ll have plenty of chances to interview with real live recruiters. There may not be much time, however, to make a good impression. Other applicants will be lined up behind you waiting their turn.

So be sure to rehearse before you get to the event. Study the answers to difficult questions. Be able to tell the interviewer why you want to work for that particular company. Why are you looking for work at this time? What happened at your last job? Why should we hire you?

Make the most of the brief time you have with your interviewer. They’ll appreciate it if you come across as knowledgeable and confident.

Follow-Up Professionally After The Event

With a bit of good luck, you might get hired on the spot. Normally though, once the event is over, it’s time to organize yourself for following-up in a memorable way. Make notes about each employer you met with. Use the business cards you collected from each interviewer to identify contact information.

Send each person you met with a short thank you note (by e-mail is fine) within three business days. Mention some of the highlights of your interview with them, and restate your interest in working for that company.

If appropriate, call the employer after a week or so of sending your thank you note. Ask what the status is of their search. Tell them that you would definitely like to be considered for this position. Then move on to the next employer. A thorough follow-up is an important part of attending a job fair.
