Monster Poll Shows Americans More Likely than Europeans to Work While on Vacation
 
A global poll conducted by Monster reveals that, while 11% of respondents are not concerned at all with being asked to work during their vacation and would work during any vacation, nearly half (45%) find it unacceptable to be asked to work while on vacation. Europeans and North Americans have conflicting feelings on the subject, with 57% of European respondents never finding it acceptable to be asked to work while on vacation while only 37% of North Americans feeling this way.
 
“Some of us feel the need to stay connected to our workplace even when we’re on vacation,” said Mary Ellen Slayter, Career Advice Expert for Monster. “When you take the time to clear your mind of business issues, you gain a better perspective on them when you return to the office. Additionally, when you go on vacation and know the office won’t contact you, you can enjoy yourself more – your spouse and children want and deserve your undivided attention when you’re on a family vacation. Use your vacation as it was intended. You, your co-workers and your family will all reap the benefits.”
 
Monster the worldwide leader in successfully connecting people to job opportunities and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. asked visitors to their site the question, “If asked to work during a vacation, how often is ACCEPTABLE and would not be cause for seeking another job?” and received nearly 4,000 responses. International findings included:
 
·         Frequently – I am not concerned with working almost every time when on vacation – 11%
·         Occasionally – I am a little concerned with working occasionally when on vacation – 17%
·         Rarely – I prefer not working when on vacation – 27%
·         Never – I do not work when on vacation – 45%
 
Breaking down the numbers by region, there were significant differences between countries. For instance, 73% of respondents in Germany answered that they never find it acceptable to be asked to work while on vacation; whereas only 35% of French respondents and 39% of UK respondents felt that way.
 
Interesting enough, Canada falls somewhere in the average midpoint; almost 50% of both English and French Canadians responded they would never work on vacation.
 
These results clearly show a culture of constant connectivity has developed, with many willing to work while on vacation or annual leave.
 
To help employees strike a good work-life balance Monster offers some top tips on how to ensure the expectations on their shoulders are fair and manageable while on vacation
  • Find out first. If working while on vacation is a serious concern for you it is a good idea to ask about the protocol ahead of accepting a job. While you need to avoid  appearing uncommitted, if you ask about the expectation of working ‘out-of-hours’ you’ll be able to match it to your needs.
  • Agree boundaries. It’s wise to tread carefully as to not appear uncommitted but your holiday time should be your own and it is reasonable to agree boundaries with your employer. This can feel daunting but if you are able to create an open dialogue with your boss you’ll find both parties will benefit and have the opportunity to respect the agreement you have come to.
  • Resist the urge. If you have told your employer you will be away and out of contact between certain dates it’s important to stick to your word. Logging on or checking emails anyway just sends the message that in reality you are happy to keep on working, giving your employer a license to make the demand.
