Sometimes we forget that there is a human component to online recruitment. Let me assure you that there are people working behind the scenes. I am one of them and this is my story.
I used to have a basic office job where I worked a typical 9 to 5. I was happy enough and you could say I had a “good job”.
Then one fateful day, I went to work and got “the call”. I was sent upstairs to see Human Resources. The company was restructuring and they wished me the best in my future endeavors. I was laid off.
They sent me on my way with a package and some career counseling.
I can't say I was surprised but somehow I didn't expect it to happen to me. The economy was down and a few of my colleagues had suffered the same fate. I went home to face my new reality
. I spent a few days at home relaxing and recharging my battery. I lounged around on the couch in my pajamas and took it as easy as possible.
Afterwards, I felt lost and confused, reality had sunk in, I kept asking myself, “Why did this happen to me? What would I do now?”
My job had given me a sense of purpose and identity. People often ask, “What do you do for a living?” I no longer had an answer to this question.
After answering some of these questions, I decided to try out some career counseling
. After all, I hadn't applied for a job in a while. I was almost certain that things had changed since then.
The first thing I learned was how to customize my CV. Gone are the days of the generic one size fits all document. In this day and age the importance of tailoring your CV
to the job is paramount. Another revelation was the use of keywords
. I had no idea of their importance. This simple step can help ensure that employers read your CV
. Listing the right attributes, skills and qualifications will help you get noticed.
So I retooled my CV
and on the advice of my career counselor I posted it on Monster.ca
. I have to be honest, back then I had never used Monster's services, but I had nothing to lose. A few days later I got a phone call from them. They had found my CV online and wanted me to come in for an interview. They were creating a new position and felt that my profile and experience would be a good match. I was caught completely off guard.
First of all, the service had worked so quickly. Secondly, I was happy to learn that Monster.ca
had offices located in my city. I arranged to have an interview
with them and the date was set. In the meantime I'd forgotten that I had a dentist appointment scheduled that same morning.
In spite of it I decided to attend. So with clean teeth and the left side of my face numb from anesthesia, I went for an interview
. I decided to be incredibly friendly and smile extra wide to overcompensate. What was the worst thing that could happen? The recruiter would think I was really friendly or perhaps slightly deranged.
I arrived at their office about 15 minutes before my interview, and met with the department manager and the hiring managers. We went into the conference room and proceeded with the interview. The conversation was casual and my interviewers were warm and friendly
. I felt comfortable and could imagine myself working with them. I thought it went well, but I didn't want to get my hopes up. Since my layoff, my self-confidence was shattered
so I had some doubts.
On my way home my cell phone rang, it was them, they offered me the job! I was stunned but not too stunned to accept it. I couldn't believe it! I had just lost my job a few weeks ago and now I was employed once again. Maybe it was because of the career counseling, or perhaps a bit of serendipity. Honestly I can't say, on the outside I was trying to be cool and calm. On the inside I was a raging lunatic. To say I was happy would be an understatement!
I soon started working at Monster and I loved the job. It was such an inviting environment. I enjoyed what I was doing and I was learning a lot. I was truly enjoying my role as a Client Performance Advisor
. This was a new position in the company so I had a chance to be a pioneer.
My job was to help employers improve their results on their job postings
. With the use of an analytical tool we helped measure results and implement recruitment best practices. The team was great and I enjoyed working with such nice people. This was the first time in ages that I enjoyed going to work.
A few months ago I was contacted by my former colleagues. They followed my blog and mentioned that they were looking for website contributors. I accepted their offer and once again, here I am working for Monster.ca!
I now consider myself a true Monster.ca success story. It worked for me and it can work for you too.
